Thomas McCartney • an hour ago ACKNOWLEDGING NEGATIVE TRAITS IN A BREED IS “RACISM”In recent years the term breed “racism” had emerged when addressing breed related issues and regulations. The
concept is if you support dog breed regulations or acknowledge negative
breed specific traits it is equivalent to the human form of racism. The
error in the concept is that humans and dogs are very different
creatures.Dog breeds exist because they are specifically
designed for a purpose. Dogs are selectively bred for physical and
breed trait aspects. Humans do not reproduce in that manner. Humans are
not selectively bred and have a choice in their mate. To make this
concept equivalent, humans would have to be purposely bred for certain
physical or personality traits over the course of hundreds of years.Thomas McCartney Thomas McCartney • an hour ago It
has not been determined that selectively breeding humans would actually
work since there has not been any official scientific studies
conducted. The closest humanity came to selective breeding was the
concept of Eugenics, which was trying to breed out negative physical
traits, such as mental illness, and breed in positive traits, such as a
high I.Q. The concept has been abandoned by most cultures due to the
difficulty of selective breeding due to the high incidence of unplanned
pregnancies.Dogs have been selectively bred for many
generations with great success. Since racism in the human culture is
based solely on the color of one’s skin, hence the “race” in racism, and
not personality traits, it does not accurately compare to dog breeding.
To accurately compare, one would have to judge a dog based solely on
fur color.Thomas McCartney Thomas McCartney • an hour ago Most breeds are judged on physical and
personality related breed traits, so the term breed “racism” is
equivalent to human forms of racism. It is surprising that more people
are not offended by this comparison.Comparing breed
struggles to the Civil Rights movement seems a little extreme and
minimalizes the struggles of certain races in history. The comparison of
dog breeds and racism has no basis.
Thomas McCartney • a day ago Pit bulls ‘unstable’.Re: Proposed pit bull ban.I am
in full support of banning this vicious breed. This past weekend my
brother’s small dog had her face torn off in an unprovoked attack in
Chicago. The nature-versus-nurture debate does not apply to
these animals. I’m positive the downtown lawyer that owned the dog was
not training him to be a fighting dog. Replace “small dog” with “his
two-yea.
r-old daughter” and perhaps this might hit home for any moron suggesting these animals are a peaceful breed.Thomas McCartney Thomas McCartney • a day ago I’m still sick at the thought that it
could have been my niece. What is worse is that the dog is still alive
and is only required to wear a muzzle moving forward. What a disgusting
response to an unprovoked and vicious attack. Why do we need to wait until humans have been mauled and mutilated before we put down these animals?Pit bulls are no more misunderstood than grizzly bears or serial
killers. Justifying an attack in any way is senseless and offensive.
These animals are unstable.
Thomas McCartney • a day ago Pit-bull owners say many things in defence of their dogs: they're loyal
family pets; when properly trained, they're safe to be around; and
they're no more likely to bite than other breeds. All true. But
when they attack, no other breed can inflict as much destruction on its
victim, far too often small, innocent children who are left with
devastating injuries - if they live.Despite what owners claim,
even well-bred pit bulls regularly "snap," such as the terrible case
involving four-year-old Emma-Leigh Cranford, whose throat was ripped
open by the pit bull of a family friend during a White Rock barbecue.Thomas McCartney Thomas McCartney • a day ago While many pit-bull owners are decent
people, too often they are owned by young men, who keep the dogs to
appear tough while terrifying those around them. Watch a dog park clear
when a pit bull arrives or watch others walking their dogs cross the
street to avoid confrontation.Enough is enough. As many are
saying, it's time for B.C. to follow Ontario's lead and ban the breed.
We've had too many little Emma-Leighs for Victoria to keep ignoring the
issue.Pit bulls were bred to fight, to have ridiculously
destructive bites and to inflict maximum damage on their prey. They are
weapons that are not welcome in our neighborhoods.
Thomas McCartney • a day ago Miss Universe Canada has joined the fight for a pit bull ban in B.C., and plans to make the effort a major part of her reign.Sahar Biniaz, 26, was crowned Miss Universe Canada on May 19, and
thinks the provincial government should adopt either a pit bull ban or
at least require that pit bulls must be leashed and muzzled at all
times. The Richmond resident was a victim of a pit bull attack herself at the age of 14, a year after her family adopted a five-month-old pit bull from a breeder. The pit bull "came from a really nice environment," she said, but "then
I ended up getting 16 stitches." Biniaz still bears the scars on her
chest to this day.Thomas McCartney Thomas McCartney • a day ago "I was just sitting down and it just
kept staring at me, and I don't know what aggravated it," she said. "It
just all of sudden... went off."Biniaz said her parents ended
up getting rid of the pit bull as opposed to putting it down, but every
time she hears of a pit bull attack she remembers that day."This is something you hear all the time, over and over again," she
said, noting that with her Miss Universe Canada title she now has "a
voice... to bring more awareness to this [issue]."Biniaz said recent pit bull attacks — like the one on Emma-Leigh Cranford, 4, on Aug. 23 in White Rock — spurred her to act.
